This is one of the most charming stages of the Camino del Norte with the mountains of the north providing a dramatic contrast to the picturesque coastline. Your journey starts in Santillana de Mar, a lovely medieval village with its buildings huddled together in a maze of cobbled streets and red rooftops. You will finish you walk in the pleasant seaside resort of Ribadesella.

Itinerary Details

Day 1 – Fly Dublin to Santander and transfer (optional) to Santillana

Day 2 – Walk from Santillana del Mar to Comillas (22 km)

Day 3 – Walk from Comillas to Unquera (26 km)

Day 4 – Walk from Unquera to Llanes (25 km)

Day 5 – Walk from Llanes to Nueva (18 km)

Day 6 – Walk from Nueva to Ribadasella (16 km)

Day 7 – At leisure in Ribadesella

Day 8 – Transfer (optional) from the hotel to Santander airport for return flight to Dublin


Your accommodation will be in 2/3* hotels/pensions while walking. Your en suite room will be simple, basic and clean. Facilities generally consist of a reception area and a breakfast room. Some have restaurant facilities. Breakfast is usually of the continental variety - coffee and croissants – anything else is bonus!

As we use a wide range of accommodations in the various overnight locations you will be advised of names of all accommodation with your travel documents.

Upgrade to the Parador de Santillana del Mar

This Parador is a manor house, located in the heart of the Old town Plaza of Santillana del Mar. This 8th century town was declared a National Monument. The Parador maintains the traditional local style of architecture, with stone arches and wooden balconies, modern, yet in harmony with its old and tranquil surroundings. Bedrooms have wooden furnishing with rustic decor and generally overlook the delightful garden.

Upgrade to the Parador de Santillana Gil Blas

This Parador is in a lovely 17th century mansion. The grand entrance leads to open welcoming public areas with wooden floors and traditional décor. There are wrought-iron balconies and beamed ceilings. The bedrooms are comfortable and in keeping with the traditional feel of the hotel. There is a bar and a restaurant serving traditional cuisine and a garden and a sauna.

Important Information

  • Walking grade: Moderate
  • Walking each day: you are “independent” which means you have maximum flexibility – set off walking in the morning whenever you are ready, walk at your own pace, choose when and where to stop for lunch en route and plan the day around your own agenda. You simply leave your packed luggage at reception and it will be awaiting you on arrival in your next accommodation!
  • If you cannot continue walking? – have no worries, public transport and/or taxis are available. Simply call our local partner in Spain who will be happy to assist – he speaks fluent English!
  • We can tailor-make your Camino to suit your personal preferences – pick your own dates, decide how many days walking you would like and even add in rest days along the way.

How to reserve a place(s): a completed booking form with deposit of €250.00 (+ cost of insurance if required) per person - payment by cash/cheque/debit or credit card - should be sent directly to MAP Travel. The balance will be due 10 weeks prior to departure - payment by cash/cheque or debit card only.
