Camino Francés Final Stage - Sarria to Santiago

This is final stage of the Camino Francés. It takes 5 days walking to complete, averaging approx. 22 km per day and qualifies you for the Compostela (certificate). The trail is a combination of small country roads, stone footpaths and well maintained compact dirt tracks with not too many steep climbs or treacherous descents. This walk is considered “moderate” and suitable for anyone who is reasonably fit but, most importantly, stamina is required.

Itinerary Details

Day 1 – Sarria

Depart Dublin on direct flight to Santiago de Compostela. On arrival in Santiago, meet and greet and transfer to your accommodation in Sarria. Overnight in Sarria.

Day 2 – Sarria to Portomarin (22 km)

Enjoy a peaceful walk in shady oak woods, through pretty villages and on quiet country roads. The route takes you to the village of Barbadelo with its beautiful Romanesque Church of Santiago de Barbadelo. Cross the river Miño and enter the village of Portomarín. Try the local speciality – “Tarta de Santiago”.

Day 3 – Portomarin to Palas de Rei (23 km)

Today’s walk goes by Monte San Antonio with the Torres river to the right. Pass small villages and gentle undulating countryside so typical of Galicia. From Hospital de la Cruz a 10 km. walk takes you through Eirexe, with its beautiful Romanesque church and Portos before arriving in Palas de Rei for overnight.

Day 4 – Palas de Rei to Arzúa (28 km)

The walk today is slightly downhill and once again marvel at the fabulous Galician countryside, the charming villages and medieval churches before arriving in the bustling market town of Melide, a good place to stop for lunch. Follow the forest road, cross the streams and arrive in Boente with its church of Santiago. Pass Ribadiso, a medieval village before arriving in Arzúa. Take the opportunity to see the Santa Maria and Magdalena churches and sample the cheese for which Arzúa is famous. Overnight in Arzúa.

Day 5 – Arzúa to Pedrouzo (19 km)

On this section of the Camino you will walk through woods, along streams and through sleepy villages. Be sure to visit the chapel of Santa Irene with its fountains and unique statues of St. James as you near your final destination, Santiago de Compostela. Overnight in Pedrouzo.

Day 6 – Pedrouzo to Santiago (20 km)

Arriving in the municipality of Santiago, you reach the town of A Lavacolla. Here in former times pilgrims would wash from head to toe in a little brook that runs through the area. Then approach the Monte de Gozo, a small hillock from where you get your first glimpse of the towers of the Cathedral of Santiago. Finally you are on the home straight leading to the gates of the Cathedral. Overnight in Santiago de Compostela.

Day 7 – Santiago de Compostela

Breakfast and morning at leisure to explore Santiago. Attend the Pilgrims Mass in the Cathedral.
Overnight in Santiago de Compostela.

Day 8

Morning at leisure before transferring to airport for return flight home.

Accommodation

Your accommodation will be in 2/3* hotels/pensions while walking. Your en suite room will be simple, basic and clean. Facilities generally consist of a reception area and a breakfast room. Some have restaurant facilities. Breakfast is usually of the continental variety - coffee and croissants – anything else is bonus!

As we use a wide range of accommodations in the various overnight locations you will be advised of names of all accommodation with your travel documents. The 2 final nights in Santiago will in a good centrally located 4* hotel in Santiago.

Important Information

  • Walking grade - moderate
  • Walking each day: you are “independent” which means you have maximum flexibility – set off walking in the morning whenever you are ready, walk at your own pace, choose when and where to stop for lunch en route and plan the day around your own agenda. You simply leave your packed luggage at reception and it will be awaiting you on arrival in your next accommodation!
  • If you cannot continue walking? – have no worries, public transport and/or taxis are available. Simply call our local partner in Spain who will be happy to assist – he speaks fluent English!
  • We can tailor-make your Camino to suit your personal preferences – pick your own dates, decide how many days walking you would like and even add in rest days along the way.
  • The direct flights from Dublin to Santiago operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays

How to reserve a place(s): a completed booking form with deposit of €250.00 per person (payment by cash/cheque/debit or credit card) should be sent directly to MAP Travel.
