Camino Francés Stage 2

The start of this stage is relatively easy. You are in the heart of La Rioja wine country. The landscape is dominated by vineyards. As you head towards Santa Domingo de la Calzada, along country roads, you pass mountain ranges to the north and south. The Camino then takes you through crop fields with small brooks and oak woods until you reach the Oca Mountains. You make your way down into the valley of the Pico river to reach the medieval city of Burgos with its spectacular gothic Cathedral.

Itinerary Details

Day 1: Los Arcos

Fly Dublin to Bilbao and private transfer (optional) to Los Arcos.

Day 2: Los Arcos - Logroño (27.5 km)

There are some steep sections on today’s walk into the Cornava river valley.Passing through the town of Viana with its two palaces you are now in the heart of the Rioja wine region.The bustling town of Logroño is the capital of this region and is the second largest city on the Camino Francés.

Day 3: Logroño - Najera (28.7 km)

Leave Logroño through the Puerta del Camino, an arch in the old town walls.The walk today takes you to Navarrete which is famous for its rosé Rioja wine (there are nine bodegas here where you can taste them!).Continue on to Najera.

Day 4: Najera - Santo Domingo de la Calzada (20.9 km)

This is your last day walking in the La Rioja region.Wide country roads and gently rolling farmland take you to the medieval town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada.This historic town has many attractive features and the magnificent 12th century cathedral is well worth a visit.

Day 5: Santo Domingo de la Calzada - Belorado (23.4 km)

Leave Santo Domingo over the River Oja through the Puente del Santo (Saint’s Bridge) built by Saint Dominic many centuries ago and head to the village of Granon. your last village in the La Rioja region.From here descend to the La Rioja – Castilla Leon border.You will pass the villages of Redecilla del Camino, Castildelgado and Villamayor del Rio before finally reaching Belorado.

Day 6: Belorado - St. Jean de Ortega (23.6 km)

Your walk today is through open countryside.Crossing the bridge over the River Orca will take you to Villafranca Montes de Orca, the last village before you reach St. Jean de Ortega.The 12th century church of St. Juan de Ortega contains the tomb of San Juan, the patron saint of fertility.

Day 7: St. Jean de Ortega - Burgos (25.7 km)

Two kilometres after Agés you will reach the village of Atapuerca from where you descend to Burgos, passing through the villages of Villalval, Cardenuela de Riopico, Oraneja and Villafria in the suburbs of Burgos.This attractive city is dominated by the magnificent cathedral which houses the tomb of El Cid.

Accommodation

Your accommodation will be in 2/3* hotels/pensions while walking. Your en suite room will be simple, basic and clean. Facilities generally consist of a reception area and a breakfast room. Some have restaurant facilities. Breakfast is usually of the continental variety: coffee and croissants – anything else is bonus!

As we use a wide range of accommodations in the various overnight locations you will be advised of names of all accommodation with your travel documents.


Upgrade to the 4* Parador in Santo Domingo de la Calzada (Day 4)

This Parador has been hosting pilgrims since the 12thcentury although not with its present 4 star comforts. Conveniently located in the heart of the old quarter, right next door to the cathedral it was built by Saint Dominic and boasts traditionally decorated, comfortable bedrooms. It has a sauna, jacuzzi, fitness area and a bar. Regional specialities are served at the restaurant all washed down with the world-famous local Rioja wines.

Important Information

  • Walking grade: Moderate
  • Walking each day: you are “independent” which means you have maximum flexibility – set off walking in the morning whenever you are ready, walk at your own pace, choose when and where to stop for lunch en route and plan the day around your own agenda. You simply leave your packed luggage at reception and it will be awaiting you on arrival in your next accommodation!
  • If you cannot continue walking? – have no worries, public transport and/or taxis are available. Simply call our local partner in Spain who will be happy to assist – he speaks fluent English!
  • We can tailor-make your Camino to suit your personal preferences – pick your own dates, decide how many days walking you would like and even add in rest days along the way.

How to reserve a place(s): a completed booking form with deposit of €250.00 (+ cost of insurance if required) per person - payment by cash/cheque/debit or credit card - should be sent directly to MAP Travel. The balance will be due 10 weeks prior to departure - payment by cash/cheque or debit card only.
