Camino Francés Stage 3

Starting from Burgos, the medieval city and hometown of “El Cid”, this Camino is certainly one of the most rewarding in terms of culture and natural surroundings. It takes you along the Meseta (the high central plain), through small rustic villages that sprung up along the Camino trail, across the Pisuerga River, through Sahagun, a medieval town renowned for its architecture, passing through the door of the fortress of Mansilla de las Mulas and on to Leon, architecturally one of the greatest cities in Spain.

Itinerary Details

Day 1: Burgos

Dublin to Bilbao and private transfer (optional) to Burgos

Day 2: Burgos - Isar (20 km)

Your walk starts in the area known as The Meseta, the high plains of central Spain which intersect the Camino between Burgos and Astorga.It is known for its wide skies, dry heat and flat lands.Villages en route are small and far apart.

Day 3: Isar - Castrojeriz (20.3 km)

Staying on the Meseta you walk through the pilgrim village of Hontanas to reach Castrojeriz.

Day 4: Castrojeriz - Fromista (24.8 km)

A steep climb up to the Alto de Mostelares will be rewarded with magnificent views of the valley below.A pleasant walk along the canal from Boadilla del Camino takes you to Fromista.

Day 5: Fromista - Carrión de los Condes (18.6 km)

Today’s walk is relatively short and mostly flat.5 km before Carrión de los Condes is the small village of Villacazar de Sirga.Take a moment to look at the Romanesque church of Santa Maria la Blanca built by the Templars.

Day 6: Carrión de los Condes - Calzadilla (16.9 km)

Mostly flat surfaces today’s route has little shade as you walk to Calzadilla along the old Roman road.

Day 7: Calzadilla - Bercianos (32.2 km)

Small villages are not far apart.Sahagún is the halfway point on the Camino Francés and also where the Camino de Madrid joins it.

Day 8: Bercianos - Mansilla de las Mulas (26.4 km)

This is mainly an agricultural region and, after passing two valleys, the landscape becomes a little more hilly before you reach Mansilla de las Mulas.

Day 9: Mansilla de las Mulas to León (18.1 km)

You cross the rivers Esla Mansill and rio Porma before joining the main road to León.A steep descent takes you down to this beautiful city with its magnificent Gothic Cathedral.Don’t miss the Casa de los Botines designed by Gaudi.

Day 10: León - Valladangos (20.1 km)

The first few kilometres today are mostly through an industrial area.The first village you reach will be Virgen del Camino with one of the few modern churches on the Camino.You will also pass through the villages of Valverde de las Virgen and San Miguel del Camino before reaching Villadongos.

Day 11: Villadangos - Astorga (28.1 km)

Continuing along the plains of León you will pass through several villages including Puenta de Orbigo with its beautiful medieval bridge, before reaching the lively market town of Astorga. The 15th century cathedral houses a museum and it is worth visiting the Museum of Pilgrimage in the Palacio Episcopal designed and built by Gaudi.

Day 12:

Private transfer (optional) from Astorga to Santiago Airport.


Your accommodation will be in 2/3* hotels/pensions while walking. Your en suite room will be simple, basic and clean.Facilities generally consist of a reception area and a breakfast room.Some have restaurant facilities.Breakfast is usually of the continental variety: coffee and croissants – anything else is bonus!As we use a wide range of accommodations in the various overnight locations you will be advised of names of all accommodation with your travel documents.

Important Information

  • Walking grade: Moderate
  • Walking each day: you are “independent” which means you have maximum flexibility – set off walking in the morning whenever you are ready, walk at your own pace, choose when and where to stop for lunch en route and plan the day around your own agenda. You simply leave your packed luggage at reception and it will be awaiting you on arrival in your next accommodation!
  • If you cannot continue walking? – have no worries, public transport and/or taxis are available. Simply call our local partner in Spain who will be happy to assist – he speaks fluent English!
  • We can tailor-make your Camino to suit your personal preferences – pick your own dates, decide how many days walking you would like and even add in rest days along the way.

How to reserve a place(s): a completed booking form with deposit of €250.00 (+ cost of insurance if required) per person - payment by cash/cheque/debit or credit card - should be sent directly to MAP Travel. The balance will be due 10 weeks prior to departure - payment by cash/cheque or debit card only.
