St Martin de Porres Pilgrimage - Peru

This Pilgrimage starts in Lima, the birthplace of St. Martin de Porres and St. Rose of Lima, both of the Dominican Order. St. Martin died here on 3 November 1639 aged just 59 and we will celebrate his Feast Day during our visit. A short flight will take us to Cusco the former Inca capital noted for its archaeological sites and Spanish colonial architecture and from here we will take a train through The Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu – the spectacular Inca city set high in the Andes, justifiably one of the Seven Wonders of the World!

Itinerary Details

Day 1 – Dublin, Amsterdam, Lima

Depart Dublin via Amsterdam (1 hr 40 mins) to Lima (12 hrs. 40 mins).

Meet and greet at the airport and transfer to hotel. Overnight in Lima.

Day 2 – Lima

Today explore the historic colonial heart of the city - Plazas de Armas the Cathedral and ornate Archbishop’s Palace, the Church of Santo Domingo which houses the remains of St. Martin de Porres and St. Rose of Lima, the Monastery of St. Francis with its catacombs and the National Museum. Overnight in Lima.

Day 3 – Lima, Feast day of St. Martin de Porres

Celebrate Mass in the Church of Santo Domingo which houses the remains of St. Martin de Porres. Overnight in Lima.

Day 4 – Lima, Cusco

After breakfast take a flight to Cusco (1 hr.5 min) the ancient Inca capital set high in the Andes mountains. Afternoon free to relax and acclimatise. Overnight in Cusco.

Day 5 – Cusco

Morning guided tour of Cusco, including the cathedral, the extraordinary Koricancha (Temple of the Sun) and the fortress of Sacsayhuaman. Afternoon at leisure. Overnight in Cusco.

Day 6 – Cusco, Sacred Valley

Full day tour through the Sacred Valley of the Incas visiting the Indian Market at Pisac and the Inca Fortress and Citadel at Ollantaytambo. Overnight in the Sacred Valley.

Day 7 – Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes

Take the train (1 hr. 30 min) to the famous Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu known as “the Lost City of the Incas” justifiably one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Following a guided tour, lunch (included) and some free time to explore the site at your leisure. Dinner (included) and overnight in Aguas Calientes (just 9 km from Machu Picchu).

Day 8 – Machu Picchu - Cusco

Morning free to return to Machu Picchu or spend some time exploring the town of Aguas Calientes before taking the train back to Cusco. Afternoon at leisure. Overnight in Cusco.

Day 9 – Cusco - Lima

After breakfast transfer from Cusco to the airport for return flight to Lima. Afternoon at leisure. Overnight in Lima.

Day 10 – Lima – Amsterdam

Breakfast. Day at leisure for last minute shopping or further sightseeing. Transfer to airport in time to check in for return flight to Amsterdam arriving following morning.

Day 11 – Amsterdam, Dublin

Depart Amsterdam a 15.25 hrs and connect with onward flight to Dublin departing at 21.20 hrs.


San Agustin Exclusive Miraflores, Lima 4* (or similar)

This spacious hotel is 1 km from the commercial centre of Miraflores and a short walk to the Pacific Ocean. The rooms have en suite bathrooms and cable TV. The hotel also has a restaurant and a bar.

San Augustin Plaza Hotel, Cusco 3* (or similar)

This hotel is located right in front of the Incan Temple of the Sun, Koricancha. 77 rooms have cable TV, safe, minibar and hairdryer. The hotel also has a bar and restaurant. WiFi.

La Casona de Yucay, Sacred Valley 3* (or similar)

Located in an 18th century building, this hotel is situated in Sacred Valley. The rooms are decorated with traditional Inca fabrics and have large windows overlooking the gardens or the mountains. The hotel also has a restaurant and a bar.

El Mapi by Inkaterra Hotel 3* (or similar)

This hotel is located in the heart of Machu Picchu town. The rooms have cable TV. Free WiFi in the public areas. There is a bar that serves tapas, piscos and wines and a café serving breakfast buffet.

Important Information

  • Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date.
  • Visa: a tourist entry visa is required.
  • Vaccinations: please check with your local GP or Tropical Medicine Centre for up to date information.
  • Altitude sickness: Altitude sickness is common especially among travellers who fly directly to Cusco or Puno. Take time to acclimatise on arrival – rest for a few hours, drink plenty of fluids, eat lightly, avoid alcohol and – most importantly - heed the local advice!
